Effect of Corona Virus on Sub Saharan Africa

Covid-19 causative effect on Africa

So what will you get from today’s post?

Today I will walk you the following step by step based on what I have found and experienced in my home…

Here is what you will get!

  • You will have the knowledge of what coronavirus is…

  • Why it was named Covid-19

  • Social media magic cure that’s not been proven

  • How destructive this will be for sub-saharan Africans

  • You will know how this virus is transmitted from one person to another

  • Finally, I will tell you how you can prevent this virus from affecting others…

So now that you know what to expect, let’s dive in.

What is Corona Virus

According to Greg Braden, a virus is a very small nonliving organism.

It can not be seen with the mere eyes and in some cases even difficult to see with a microscope.

and yes it has DNA and RNA but the thing is this virus does not actively search for anyone to effect.

Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).

Covid-19 World health organisation

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a new strain that was discovered in 2019 and has not been previously identified in humans.

Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people.

Why is this key?

Take for example, the Coronavirus can be sitting on a surface for several hours without leaving the spot.

I will use examples you can easily relate to for the sake of this post…

An example of surfaces corona virus can be found…

  • Door handles

  • Hands

  • Cups

  • Pot covers

  • Gas cylinders

  • TV remote e.t.c

Attention: Every opinion I am expressing here are strictly mine and one I concluded on after research.

So you can take it with a grain of salt because I am not a scientist.

The only thing I aim with this post is to spread awareness because right where I live I heard a woman say God is ending the world.

Such claims are very illiteracy driven and lack facts.

Having said that, corona virus at the moment of writing this blog post is not a living thing…

because living things have metabolism, they reproduce, they have a definite life span.

Corona virus or Covid-19 does not show any attributes of a living thing.

but it is rather dependent on the body of the host to cause it’s damage and destruction.

Here is a video by Greg Braden explaining everything about Corona virus…

Please watch it stay informed because in some ways he is a scientist…

Why is The Virus Named Covid-19

Imagine the effect of Corona Virus on sub Sahara africa if covid-19 was first found in Africa…

Well, you certainly could predict that the Western world wouldn’t wait this long to short its doors as a preventive measure.

Frankly, I won’t blame any Western countries either you know because they owe to the citizens of these countries to keep them safe.

Covid-19

So why was it names Covid-19?

Well, during my research for this post, I realize that WHO has tried to stop naming viruses after people, countries or cities.

This is because naming a virus after a place or people can forever stigmatize such cities, countries or persons.

The CO means Corona, the VI means a virus, the D means Disease and -19 means the year it was first discovered.

Social Media Magic Cure for Corona Virus in Sub-Saharan Africa

Covid-19 In sub Saharan Africa is being given magical cures that have not been scientifically proven.

Yes, the world is going through a tough time right now, but please the only thing that can get you and I through this time is to stay informed.

and by staying informed I mean read and follow articles from trusted sources.

Here in my country it’s been popularly believed that our hot weather is a cure for Corona Virus!

but this has not been proven to be because as at when writing this post a lot of people are believing this…

As a matter of fact, it is possible for this virus to survive in both hot and cold environments.

Don’t believe any unproven cure for this virus so you don’t end up consuming things that can be harmful to your health.

Also believing that you are safe because you consumed some of the following social media magic cures can be dangerous.

Corona Virus

this is bad because it creates false hope of being safe when in actuality you may not be safe.

Now here are some of the unproven social media magic cure for Corona Virus on the New York Times, please take your time to read it…

How Destructive Corona Virus Can be for Sub Saharan Africa (A Personal View)

The effect of corona virus on sub saharan Africa can be really disastrous if awareness is not properly raised.

I have seen a lot of poor people term this virus that God is ending the world because of a lack of awareness.

Here is the reason why I think the effect of Covid-19 on sub-Saharan Africa can be really destructive.

  • We are too religious in Africa, so instead of taking protective measures, we allow the normalcy syndrome to take effect

  • Africans do not tend to very disturbing issues at the very onset until it’s life-threatening

  • Africa has the highest person to person contact in the world

Now I will touch each of the highlighted bullet points above for a thorough understanding.

So here I go!

Africa is a Very Religious Country

In the wake of this virus which continues to dwindle the world’s economy, several African countries still do not see the magnitude of this virus.

Developed countries like Italy could not contain this virus.

As a matter of fact, the dead toll in Italy has surpassed even China where the virus was first discovered.

As developed as China, it took 3 months to fight off Covid-19…

and a second wave is being predicted because people from other countries still flying into China.

Normalcy syndrome is the other of the day especially among the Nigerians who keep thinking this is just another day on planet earth.

I have seen several comedians use this as comedy rather than awaking the awareness of the public.

I know you and I hope and believe in God but please practice the safety hygiene tips as directed by WHO.

In the latter part of this post, I will list some of these hygienic tips.

Africans Do Not Respond to Issues Until its Life-Threatening (Especially Nigerians)

Okay, this is one I have particularly found to be a common thing within Nigerians.

Only about 10% of the Nigerian population would take panadol once they first feel the symptoms.

Also, only 3% of this 10% will successfully complete the dose of a medicine once it’s been prescribed.

Now let’s apply this same percentage to corona virus knowing fully well that this data can be skewed.

world health safety hygienic tips

This data may be skewed but my point is Africans can be very negligent when it comes to things that are serious.

This negligence can affect the population of African during the wake of this virus if it’s not properly contained.

I see a lot of people still believing that this is nothing and pretend that everything is normal.

This is particularly dangerous because this is the easiest way this virus can be spread.

I am inside my home and as at when writing this article I can still see people getting set for public gathering.

I think it’s crazy but hey just my opinion you know!

Africa Have The Highest Person to Person Contact in The World

Okay, this is particularly my biggest fear and why I think the Covid-19 effect on Sub Saharan Africa will be fatal if proper measures are not taken.

As a matter of fact, if world health organization declared this a Pandemic then there is a good chance you want to pay close attention.

Here is a brief story of my personal experience!

I want to use it to demonstrate to you how you and I as Africans can easily spread this virus because of the way we joke about everything.

Here is the story!

A couple of days back I took my gas to the gas station because I was out of cooking gas.

I got to the gas station and the guy unconsciously shook my hands. before I realize it, he and I already have a person to person contact.

After feeling my gas, I used the same hands to hold my gas cylinder and carried it home. With the same hands, I opened the gate and door to my flat.

Note: Research shows that this virus can on door handles for 2 – 3 hours. Now I have effected my door handle and my protector with this same virus assuming the guy I shook has contracted it already.

but wait there is more!

I went outside to buy things and with the same hands, I held the money and gave it to the grocery store owner.

Note:  there is chances that this virus can be transferable through money.

The grocery store owner having touched my money that’s effected can use his hands to touch his face.

Just like that, he has contracted the deadly Corona Virus.

Now let’s assume he gets in contact with another person that came to buy groceries as I did, I believe you know the rest.

My point is for now, at least until this whole thing blows away be conscious.

 watch your hands 20 t0 40 seds

How is Covid-19 Transferred From One Person to Another

The major way this can be contracted is by using your hands to touch your eyes, your nose, and your mouth.

In the video I asked you to watch above there is even a theory which states that. this virus can be airborne.

This means that if a carrier sneezes, and he is gone out of the place for 2 to 3 hours the virus can still remain in the air for that 2 to 3 hours.

Though this has not been confirmed so whether it’s plausible I don’t know yet.

The reason I decided to make this post is to raise your awareness and not to keep you scared.

I believe the more aware you are, the better the chances of you and I surviving this pandemic.

Also, Corona Virus can be transferred through cough…

and finally, it can be transferred through effected materials such as your cup, door handle, heck even money.

Here is a bullet list for your easy understanding…

Covid-19 can be transferred from one person to another through…

  • Sneezing

  • Coughing

  • Effected door handles

  • Affected household materials e.t.c

How Can One Prevent The Spread of Corona Virus (Covid-19)

So far WHO has proposed some of the ways you and I can stay safe from this virus.

So I will list each of the steps below and even embed a video where necessary…

Here is how not to get infected by Covid-19 in Africa.

  • Wash your hands frequently

Here is a video that can show you how exactly you need To wash your hands.

  • Practice social distances

What this means is that you can still talk to your friends and family while maintaining some distances of 5 feet.

This will essentially keep you safe from the sneezing or coughing of any affected person.

  • Spread the awareness

Africa suffers from normalcy syndrome in the wake of such life-threatening issues like this…

So it’s better if you can use your word of mouth, social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram to spread the word.

This will help raise awareness and can further help mitigate the risk of everyone getting exposed to this virus.

How Has Covid-19 Affected Sub Sahara Africa?

There have been some flashpoints in Africa but the death toll has been way minimal as when writing this post.

South Africa shows the highest number of infected people but no death has been recorded.

Gabon has recorded one death already…

Burkina Faso has also recorded one death…

Lagos Nigeria is rumored to be on lockdown by Monday.

Although the source of this story is not yet confirmed I was privileged to talk to my cousin in Lagos.

He revealed that there is high activities of people going to get groceries should the lockdown be effective.

Conclusion

The effect of Corona Virus on Africa has so far look minimal…

but it’s just beginning to takes it’s toll and with a little awareness, you and I can do our best to keep it at bay.

The government is also trying their best but please and please practice these safety hygienic tips.

Hopefully, this will blow away and I hope God sees us through.

because so far I respectfully think that the effect this Covid-19 might have on sub Sahara africa is something you and I is not ready for.

Please practice hygienic tips because it is important you do…

This is time to be scared but a time to be awake and alert so you and I can safely fight off this disease.

Now it’s your turn!
