Wizkid’s Fatal Grammy Loss To Angelique Kidjo
Undoubtedly one of the biggest stars from Africa of the current generation and the pioneer of global Afrobeat.
Wizkid is a king in the making and right alongside him are giants like Davido, Olamide, Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, and Burna Boy.
These guys have all played a part in the global recognition of Afrobeat but so did Psquare, 2baba, and Dbanj.
Having said that, getting listed as one of the best music superstars in Africa is no joke. Right?

Now, the Grammys, yeah?
Let me be a bit blunt here…
Wizkid lost in the Best Global Music Performance category and Best Global Music Album category to Arooj Aftab, Mohabbat, and Angelique Kidjo.
It’s painful, I know but whichever way you see it, it was Africans that scooped the award which is a win for us all.
With that said, I don’t really know what the criteria for winning these things are because I wouldn’t have tipped Kidjo to win the award.
But it is what it is and I hope the West isn’t trying to box the development of African Music.

Quickly, let’s jump right into Davido’s FIFA World Cup performance that has caused so much commotion on Twitter.
Davido Becomes First Nigerian To Perform At The FIFA World Cup
Afrobeat is going higher and higher and the truth is Davido is right up there as the pioneer of global Afrobeat.
He is also one of the most influential artists from the African continent and that has also made him one of the highest paid Instagram influencers.
Heck, in every top 50 best Nigerian musicians list, you would see him between 2-4.
The singer dropped just one single last year titled Champion Sound and it topped the charts for weeks.
With such influence, Qatar knew the right man for the official FIFA World Cup soundtrack.
Hayya Hayya (Better Together) has done more than 5 million views in two days and that is just crazy.
This makes Davido the first Nigerian to ever be included in a FIFA soundtrack.
While this was not lauded enough, fans of the singer made their feelings known.
30BGs (Davido fans) claim that whenever it is Davido that’s winning, other celebs in the industry stay mute.
But if this was achieved by Wizkid, every celeb in Nigeria would run to the net to post congratulatory messages.

In their own words, it feels hypocritical.
Angelique Kidjo hails Yemi Alade, Burna Boy & Mr Eazi
Angelique Kidjo’s Mother Nature album won the Grammys award for Best Global Music Album category.
He beat the likes of Wizkid, and Burna Boy to scoop the award and many think it was a controversial one.
This is because a lot of people believed that Wizkid, one of the most famous African musicians deserved the award more.
But F what we all think because the award belongs to Kidjo who has been amazing since her debut in the music industry.
Once it was announced that she won, the singer came out with a culturally styled gown reminiscent of a true African to receive her award.
While giving her speech, she singled out Yemi Alade, Burna Boy, and Mr Eazi alongside many others for praise.
This is because these are some of the names that worked on the Mother Nature album and they deserved the praise.
Angelique Kidjo has been a huge Yemi Alade fan and the way they bond in songs tells you everything you need to know.
And perhaps, I am tipping Alade for a Grammy win also because I think the Grammys officials look more in the direction of African Culture represented in our songs.

Thankfully, Yemi Alade excels in embedding African rich culture and tradition in most of her songs.
Wizkid Fans Claim Grammy Was Stolen
Was the Grammy award for Best Global Music stolen from Wizkid?
Well, a lot of the singer’s fans think that is the case considering the Essence crooner failed to bring the award home.
Wizkid Made In Lagos received worldwide views thanks to Essence while also topping charts for weeks.
It became the longest-charting African album in the history of Billboard usurping Fela’s album.
I have to add that it took the singer 20 years and the digital age to be able to achieve this.
The album was released in 2020 and stayed all through 2021 as the top 5 albums in Apple Music NG.
Essence ft Justin Bieber & Tems also made it into Billboard’s top 100.

Perhaps these achievements are why fans of the singer think he was robbed.
Here are a couple of screenshots from fans of the singer expressing their total dismay.
Damn won’t lie Wizkid not winning any #GRAMMYs is a little sore coz Made In Lagos was such amazing album.
Wizkid missed out on both Grammy categories, he didn’t make Made In Lagos to target Grammys, the album got global attention organically. He can do it again, African music will be back next year at the #Grammys
I cried though I am not a fan of any of the nominees, I cried because we were robbed of our right we deserve those awards
Wrapping It Up
Wizkid’s Grammy loss must have been a big blow to the fans of the singer partly because it would have been a bragging right.
Heck, I am sure 30BG would be the happiest that Wizid lost this one.
Because I am sure they would have been dragged and trolled by Wizkid FC all day.
Either way, that’s all for the latest entertainment news in Nigeria episode 13.
